Housing Spotlight: Cheyenne River Housing Authority

We’ll talk with Sharon Vogel, the Executive Director of the Cheyenne River Housing Authority (CHRA) about their unique approach to providing housing on the Cheyenne River Sioux Reservation in South Dakota.  Founded in 1965, CRHA currently provides low-income housing to over 650 families. While they are the largest landlord on the Cheyenne River Sioux Reservation, CRHA provides housing from an approachable and culturally respectful perspective. The move-in process is designed to create a positive experience for tenants, with personalized support and resources to help them transition smoothly. We’ll talk with Sharon about how CHRA approaches fire safety, inspections, trash management, conflict resolution and even hoarding. We’ll also discuss best practices for other tribal housing departments, including prioritizing community engagement, offering ongoing education, and maintaining clear, culturally sensitive policies to support long-term housing success.
